Shropshire County Council to equip more school transport vehicles with CCTV
Midland's-based mobile CCTV specialist Activcamera's have been awarded a new contract from Shropshire County Council to install digital CCTV systems on to school contract vehicles operating throughout the county.
This new contract follows extensive trials within Shropshire to determine the benefits of CCTV in dealing with the behaviour of pupils using school transport. Mike Ritson, Senior Transport Officer within the Council's Community & Environment Services Department stated “the introduction of CCTV systems to the Council’s contracted services has proved a great success. The Council has received a professional service from Activcameras, with support being readily available whenever required. We are pleased to continue our association with Activcameras and look forward to achieving our joint aim in providing a safer journey for passengers”.
Each new vehicle installed will feature a digital recorder and four day/night colour dome cameras situated in key positions throughout the bus or coach. Video footage is recorded simultaneously from all cameras, along with audio, with the capability to record up to 100 images per second. Authorised Council Officers are able to download the footage directly to a laptop computer or remove the system hard drives for off-site review - then transferring any footage to CD for use by the schools, operators or other governing authorities.
Commenting on the award of the contract Jim Westland of Activcamera’s said, “we are delighted to extend our relationship with Shropshire County Council having worked closely with the department over the past eighteen months. We’ve now supplied systems to more than 30 local authorities and some 400 independent operators and consider that our service and support to each individual customer is what sets us apart”.
The installation of systems is to start immediately with an ongoing programme in place for the next two years.
